Walter M. Sparrow Endowment for Florence County Disabilities Foundation (2014)

When Walter M. Sparrow worked with the Community Foundation to establish an endowed agency fund for Florence County Disabilities Foundation, he got so excited about the process and the potential of the fund for long term impact, that he also started an endowed designated fund in his name that would provide the Disabilities Foundation with an annual gift in perpetuity. Walter’s legacy gift will make true the motto of Florence County Disabilities Foundation — making a difference in people’s lives.

In 1982, Sparrow became the first executive director of what is now called the Florence County Disabilities and Special Needs Board. Florence County Disabilities Foundation was later chartered to provide financial and volunteer support to the board and Sparrow ultimately ended up there. He retired on September 30, 2016 after serving those with special needs in Florence County for over three decades.

“It really is a wonderful, heartwarming feeling to know that I’ve had a positive impact on people’s lives and to be able to work with so many wonderful people along the way that have also helped make things happen,” he said.

Sparrow envisions his retirement as many do – time for gardening, traveling, making art and relaxing.

But as a lifelong lover of service, he plans to always be on hand for people with disabilities in Florence County. The fund he established will do that forever.
