This scholarship is in memory of Michelle Yolanda Glenn Carey who emphatically declared, “I want to positively affect the lives of children.” She dedicated twenty years to the teaching of many kindergarten students at Theodore Lester Elementary School in Florence. Her teaching skills extended into second generations of her initial students.
Michelle Yolanda Glenn Carey’s core belief is well summarized by Dr. Ralph Tyler, “Teaching is not just a job. It is a human service, and it must be thought of as a mission.” For those who had the pleasure of meeting, being taught by, or working with her very quickly realized that when she was in the classroom, or in an instructional capacity, she was on a mission with passion and a smile.
The recipient of this scholarship has a great legacy to uphold — to change the lives of the little ones whom they are privileged to teach. It will be awarded on a continuing basis to a graduating senior from a Florence High School who completed their elementary education at Theodore Lester Elementary School and has been accepted to an accredited institution of higher education to major in Elementary Education with the goal of teaching in an elementary school.
